About the Author

Image of authorMarcus Libkind is best known for his backcountry ski guidebooks Ski Tours in the Sierra Nevada (four volumes) and Ski Tours in Lassen Volcanic National Park. He has taught backcountry skiing and guided many trips. He also owned and operated two mountaineering stores. He is a mechanical engineer by profession.

Marcus' love for the winter backcountry drove him to found and currently is the chairman of Snowlands Network, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote opportunities for quality muscle-powered winter recreation and to protect winter wildlands in California and Nevada. He is also a founding director of Winter Wildlands Alliance, a nonprofit organization working to represent the interests of muscle-powered winter recreationists on the national level. He was appointed to the California State Winter Recreation Committee Image of author on Deadman Traverse on Sierra High Routethat advises the Deputy Director of the Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Division on winter recreation issues.

In February 2005 in recognition of his dedication to representing the interests of muscle-powered winter recreationists, Marcus was voted second place in Hooked on the Outdoors' quest for their Second Annual Outdoor Person of the Year. One of the criteria in the judging was giving back while remaining selfless along with being an inspiration to outdoor enthusiasts.

In his free time Marcus explores the wilderness by foot, kayak, canoe, raft, and of course, skis. His love for the Sierra and its winter beauty has led him to spend more than three decades in search of new and interesting ski tours. This guide is the culmination of his efforts.

His passion is supported by Clara Yen to whom he is married and he takes great pride in passing on his love for the wild outdoors and outdoor skills to his daughter Sophie. She is also his inspiration for continuing his advocacy work.
