This is the diary from my nine-day cruise from San Francisco to San Diego in September 2012. The photos come from both my collection from the trip and from Alan Brabon.

I hope you enjoy it.

Prologue

I’ve heard it said that the difference between a fairy tale and a sea story is in how they begin. A fairy tale begins “Once upon a time.” But this is a sea story so it begins “No shit. This is the honest to God truth.” And it is.

After three days of fog and almost no wind between San Francisco and Morro Bay we head out on the morning of Tuesday, September 25 for an overnight run to Santa Cruz Island. It’s still foggy, but by afternoon we are sailing downwind under the main and spinnaker.  Before dinner we switch the spinnaker out for the jib because it takes less attention. We’re now gybing downwind.

My first watch for the night is from 8 to 11 PM. The wind ranges from 10 to 20 kts. It’s not difficult to maintain 5 kts or better  but the sailing is stressful. The auto pilot can’t handle the wind with a following sea on our quarter so I must hand steer for the entire three hours. The fog is so thick I can barely see the jib and Grey Goose is surfacing down waves. It’s sailing by braille.

Compared to this, the rest of our cruise from San Francisco to San Diego was benign. Although the sailing was less exciting, it was a wonderful trip. Come and join me as we sail south on Grey Goose.
